You're standing at Fort Beneden Lent, on the north bank of the River Waal, just west of the village of Lent. It also goes by a second name: Nieuw Knodsenburg. Take a good look at what's in front of you. In the middle is a bombproof building where soldiers used to sleep. Around it runs an earthen rampart, called a redoubt, and around that, a moat. Simple, but clever: earth absorbs cannonballs better than stone does.
