Fort Pannerden in Lingewaard

You're standing at Fort Pannerden, out in the floodplains near the village of Doornenburg. Look at the water: this is where the river splits, and that's exactly why the fort is here. It was built between 1869 and 1872 as a barrier fort. No enemy was to advance along the Waal towards the New Dutch Waterline, and nobody was to dam the Pannerden Canal, because that would cut off the water the defence line depended on.
