You're standing on the Maasbandijk, the river dyke near the village of Niftrik, at a memorial with a striking name: A Bridge "Too Many". Look at the big boulder on its bed of gravel. The plate on it carries that name and a date: the first of September, 1944. Now look past the boulder to the railway bridge over the river Maas. That bridge is what this whole story is about.
