You're standing on the Noordereiland in Rotterdam, next to a tall stone column. This is the Stieltjes Monument, in honour of Thomas Joannes Stieltjes. He was born in Leuven in 1819 and died in Rotterdam in 1878. Stieltjes was a soldier and a hydraulic engineer, and he's seen as the man behind the harbours of Feijenoord, across the water on the south bank of the Nieuwe Maas. So much of the harbour landscape around you started with him.
