Fort Westervoort in Arnhem

You're standing at Fort Westervoort, on the eastern edge of Arnhem. Don't let the name fool you: the fort actually lies within the city of Arnhem. First, look at the railway embankment right next to you, because that's the reason this fort exists. In 1865 a blocking fort was built here, a fort with just one job: closing off the railway bridge over the IJssel, on the line from Arnhem to Emmerich. It was part of the IJssel Line, a line of defence along the river.
