You're standing at the Santa Justa Lift, at the end of Rua de Santa Justa in the heart of Lisbon's Baixa. Look up. That's an iron tower forty-five metres tall, seven storeys high, covered in Neo-Gothic decoration. Around 1900, iron was still a new building material, and a lift was the very symbol of a modern age. This tower shows how proud the city was of that new era.
