You're standing by the Ascensor da Bica, the little cable car that has been creeping up and down one of Lisbon's steepest streets since 1892. Look down the slope. The tracks run between rows of eighteenth-century rental buildings, and far below you can catch a glimpse of the Tagus. The line is about 245 metres long, climbing at almost twelve percent. Walk it and your calves will tell you.
