You're standing at the Padrão dos Descobrimentos, the Monument of the Discoveries, on the bank of the Tagus in Belém, Lisbon. Ships set off along this river to explore and trade with India and the East. Look at the shape. The monument takes the form of the prow of a caravel, the ship of the early Portuguese voyages. Ramps run down both sides towards the water, lined with 33 figures from the Age of Discovery.
