You're standing at the Onze-Lieve-Vrouwetoren in Amersfoort, the Tower of Our Lady, which locals call Lange Jan, or Long John. Go ahead and look up. Measured to the weathercock at the top, it's just over ninety-eight metres tall. In the Netherlands only the Dom Tower in Utrecht and the tower of the New Church in Delft rise higher. That's no coincidence: like many towers in the province of Utrecht, this one was inspired by the Dom, and of all its imitators it comes closest to the original.
