You're standing near the Appel ring fort, just north of the hamlet of Appel near Nijkerk. You might not see much at first, but there's a medieval story in the ground here. This was a ring fort: an area enclosed by an oval earthen bank, about a hundred by sixty metres. Today it's a national monument.
