You're standing on the square in front of Santa Maria Novella, a Dominican church in Florence. Start with the façade and its crisp patterns of white and green. That green isn't real marble, but serpentine from Prato. The lower section was clad in 1350. Then work stopped for more than a hundred years, until the wealthy wool merchant Giovanni Rucellai asked the architect Leon Battista Alberti to finish the job. His design was completed in 1470.
