You're standing on Piazza del Duomo in Florence, right next to the cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore and the Baptistery. The slender square tower in front of you is the campanile, the cathedral's bell tower. It stands completely apart from the church. Take a look at the walls. White, green and red marble in geometric patterns. It almost looks as if the tower has been painted. That's no accident, because the man who designed it was a painter.
