You're standing by the Vasari Corridor, the Medici family's private walkway. Look above the little shops on the Ponte Vecchio and you'll spot a long row of small windows. Behind them runs a covered passage about a kilometre long. It links the Palazzo Vecchio, the old seat of government, with the Palazzo Pitti across the Arno.
