You're standing at Blenheim Palace in Woodstock, one of the largest houses in England. Take in the great forecourt. The three blocks around it were designed to make you, the visitor, feel small. Statues and military trophies line the roofs. Above the entrance stands Britannia, with two chained French captives at her feet. And on the corner towers, cannonballs rest on lilies, the emblem of the French king. The message is hard to miss: this place celebrates a victory over France.
