You're standing in Beaumont Street in Oxford, just outside where the city's north gate once stood. It looks like an ordinary street, but there used to be a royal palace here. Head to the north side of the street, near Walton Street. Set into a pillar there is a stone with an inscription. Have a read. It says the King's Houses stood near this spot, later known as Beaumont Palace. And it says two kings were born here: Richard the Lionheart in 1157 and King John in 1167. Not bad for a modest bit of wall.
