You're standing at the Burcht van Leiden, one of the oldest surviving castles of its kind in the Netherlands. Look up at the hill. It isn't natural: people piled it up, right where two branches of the Rhine meet. On top sits a round wall with battlements. A fortress on a man-made mound like this is called a motte castle, and this is one of the best preserved examples.
