You're standing at the Church of the Holy Spirit, one of the oldest churches in Copenhagen. Start with the tower. Can you spot where the brickwork changes, somewhere along the way up? That's no accident. Work on the tower began in 1520, but the Reformation soon brought it to a halt. Building only resumed in 1582, pushed by Christoffer Valkendorff, then governor of Copenhagen. The new bricks were laid in a different pattern, so you can still see exactly where old meets new. The spire went up in August 1594. It's credited to Hans van Steenwinckel the Elder, although nobody has ever found the paperwork to prove it.
