You're standing on the cobbled, rectangular square in front of the Hirschsprung Collection, in Østre Anlæg park in Copenhagen. Take a look at the building. It's low and long, clad in pale marble, with triangular pediments and flat Doric pilasters. A temple of art, but a modest one. That was exactly the point. The tobacco manufacturer Heinrich Hirschsprung disliked the heavy, historicist museums going up in Copenhagen at the time. He wanted something sober that wouldn't dominate its surroundings. Architect Hermann Baagøe Storck drew the plans, and the entrance sits right at ground level, no grand staircase needed.
