You're standing at the Royal Palace of Portici, just southeast of Naples. Have a look around, because you're probably standing in the middle of a street. A road runs straight through the palace's great courtyard. It was once the main route to Calabria and is now called via Università. Traffic drives in through one gateway and out through the other. A guidebook from 1834 already called that an odd quirk, or rather a drawback.
