You're standing at the Temple of Apollo, right in the heart of ancient Pompeii, on the edge of the forum, the town's market square. This was Pompeii's most important religious building, and one of the two oldest temples in town. Apollo was imported from Greece, and digs nearby show he was worshipped here as early as the sixth century BC. What you see today mostly dates from a rebuild around 120 BC.
