You're standing at the Real Monasterio de la Encarnación, the Royal Monastery of the Incarnation. Take a good look at the front. It's strikingly plain and severe, in the spirit of Juan de Herrera, the architect behind the famous Escorial. No frills, just calm and discipline. It was designed and built between 1611 and 1616 by a friar who was also an architect, Brother Alberto de la Madre de Dios.
