You're standing at the entrance of Rouffignac Cave, on a slope above the little River Binche. Look across the valley. That small village, less than a kilometre away, is Fleurac. Beneath your feet is limestone packed with flint nodules, and inside it runs the biggest cave system in the Périgord. Together with the nearby Villars Cave, that's more than eight kilometres of passages, carved out by water some two to three million years ago. Today the cave is mostly dry.
