You're standing at Beauvais Cathedral, the Cathedral of Saint Peter. Look up at that choir. What you're seeing is really only part of a church. There's a choir and a transept, but the nave, the long main body, was never built. In its place still stands a piece of the cathedral that came before, a tenth-century Romanesque church known as the Basse-Œuvre, the Lower Work. Notice the difference in height?
