You're standing at the Solfatara in Pozzuoli, just outside Naples. This is a shallow volcanic crater, and you can probably smell it already. The name comes from Latin and means something like land of sulphur. The crater is part of the Phlegraean Fields, the Campi Flegrei, a large volcanic area that lies mostly beneath the Gulf of Naples.
