You're standing at Down House, the home of the naturalist Charles Darwin. It was in this house and garden that he worked out his theory of evolution. Take a look at the front. Darwin wasn't impressed at first. He thought it was ugly and looked neither old nor new. Still, he bought it in 1842 for about 2,200 pounds. He and his wife Emma wanted out of London, away from the noise and the coal smoke.
