You're standing at Knole, on the southern edge of Sevenoaks in Kent. First, take a look around you. This huge house sits in the middle of a deer park of a thousand acres, the only medieval deer park in Kent to survive. With a bit of luck you'll spot fallow or sika deer wandering between the old oaks and beeches. The park feels timeless, but in 1987 a great storm brought down more than seventy percent of its trees. Since then, over two hundred thousand new ones have been planted.
