You're standing at the Museum of the City of Skopje. Take a good look at the building in front of you, because it tells a big part of the story all by itself. This used to be Skopje's railway station. Serbian architect Velimir Gavrilović designed it, construction started in 1937, and it opened in 1940. It was meant to show off a city on the move. Notice the symmetry, and that row of arches along the upper floor? That's a mix of classical and Byzantine influences.
