You're standing at Ammersoyen Castle, on the north side of the village of Ammerzoden. Look at its shape. A square, with a heavy tower on every corner. Count Floris V of Holland made this type of castle popular, because it was so easy to defend. What makes Ammersoyen special is that it was built in one go, in the fourteenth century, by the Van Herlaer family. Most medieval castles grew bit by bit.
