You're standing at the Batterij onder Brakel, a small fort on the Waal dyke just west of the village of Brakel. It's part of the New Dutch Waterline, a defence line that could flood the land to stop an invading army. A little further west lie Loevestein Castle and the Wilhelmina lock.
