You're standing at Museum Hertogsgemaal in Gewande, a small village northeast of 's-Hertogenbosch. First, take a look at the building itself. It wasn't built as a museum but as a pumping station. From 1940 to 1979 it used electric pumps to drain the low-lying polders along the river Maas. It has been a national monument since 2002, and since 1989 it has housed a museum run by a foundation.
