You're standing at Tiryns, a citadel more than three thousand years old. Look at the walls first. They're built from enormous blocks of stone. Homer already called it mighty-walled Tiryns. The ancient Greeks couldn't believe ordinary people had lifted these stones. They thought the Cyclopes had done it, giants of superhuman strength. That's why walls like these are still called Cyclopean. The travel writer Pausanias saw them in the second century and wrote that two mules pulling together couldn't budge even the smallest stone.
