You're standing at Lerna, near the village of Mili on the Argolic Gulf, just south of Argos. Have a look around. The land here is squeezed into a narrow strip between the mountains and the sea. In ancient times, an important route ran through here, linking the Argolid with the southern Peloponnese. That's probably what made this spot matter so much.
