You're standing at the tower of the former Church of St. Nicholas in Hamburg, the Nikolaiturm. Look up. The tower is 147 metres tall. When it was finished in 1874, this was the tallest building in the world. It only held that title for two years, until Rouen Cathedral was completed in 1876. Around the tower you can see what's left of the church. Those remains were kept on purpose, as a memorial against war.
