You're standing at Verona's Duomo, the city's cathedral. Its official name is Santa Maria Matricolare, dedicated to the Virgin Mary, and it's the seat of the bishop of Verona. Two early Christian churches once stood right here. An earthquake destroyed them in 1117. This Romanesque church replaced them and was consecrated in 1187. It has been remodelled several times since, but the floor plan has never changed.
