Castle De Berckt in Peel en Maas

You're standing at De Berckt Castle in Baarlo, between Kessel and Venlo. The road past the castle follows an old Roman highway. The Berckt is mentioned as early as the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, although it's not clear whether it was a castle back then or just an estate. In 1279 Godefridus van Eyll is named as its owner. His family remained the richest in Baarlo until the end of the sixteenth century.
