You're standing in Princes Street Gardens, right at the foot of the Scott Monument. Look up for a moment. This dark, spiky tower, more than sixty metres tall, looks like the top of a Gothic cathedral that somehow lost its church. It honours the Scottish author Sir Walter Scott. Only one monument to a writer anywhere in the world is bigger: the one for José Martí in Havana. And the station just nearby, Waverley, is named after Scott's novels.
