You're standing at Fort Rammekens, near Ritthem, a few kilometres east of Vlissingen. This is the oldest surviving sea fort in Western Europe. Look at the point facing the Western Scheldt. Behind those thick walls stood the cannons. Hard to picture today, but until the French era this fort stood half in the sea.
