You're standing at Fort Ellewoutsdijk, on the north bank of the Western Scheldt. Start with the moat and the high walls. The fort is shaped like a hexagon, about eighty metres wide and a hundred and ten metres long, with outer walls ten metres high. The heavy brickwork faces the water. The northern side, towards the land, is mostly an earth rampart.
