You're standing at the Roman Thermae of Varna, on the corner of San Stefano Street and Han Krum Street. Take a good look at the sheer size of these walls. This was once a huge bathhouse, built towards the end of the second century AD. The remains cover around seven thousand square metres, and the vaults rose to twenty or twenty-two metres. That makes this the largest ancient building surviving in Bulgaria, and the biggest Roman bath complex in the Balkans. In all of Europe, only the Baths of Caracalla and Diocletian in Rome and the baths of Trier are larger.
