Slot Haamstede in Schouwen-Duiveland

You're standing at Haamstede Castle, an old castle right in the village of Haamstede on the island of Schouwen-Duiveland. First, look at the tall rectangular tower in the middle. That's the keep, from the thirteenth century. A free-standing tower like this, inside a walled enclosure, was a last place of refuge. Tower castles of this kind are rare in the Netherlands.
