You're standing at the Palace-Council House in Tilburg. With its battlements, pointed arched windows and slender corner towers, it looks like something from a fairy tale. It was built for King William the Second. As crown prince, after Belgium broke away, he set up his headquarters in Tilburg, and the quiet life here suited him. Once king, he wanted a country residence in town. On 13 August 1847 he laid the first stone himself. Legend has it he also made the first sketches, in the neo-Gothic style he knew from his childhood in England.
