Priene in Söke

You're standing in Priene, an ancient Greek city on the slopes of Mount Mycale, in Turkey. First, look down at the fertile plain below. That used to be sea. Priene stood on a bay of the Aegean. But century after century, the Maeander River carried silt downstream and filled the bay. By around the first century BC, the city had already lost its open connection to the sea. Today Priene lies inland.
