You're standing among the ruins of Miletus, once one of the most powerful Greek cities on the coast of Asia Minor. That's hard to picture, because there's no sea in sight. Yet Miletus used to lie on a large bay, near the mouth of the Maeander River. For centuries the river carried silt downstream. The bay filled up, and by early Christian times the city found itself inland. Without a harbour its trade dried up, and in the end Miletus was abandoned.
