You're standing at the National Gallery of Iceland, Listasafn Íslands in Icelandic. This is where the country keeps its own art: work by famous Icelandic artists, and pieces that help explain traditional Icelandic culture. Take a good look at the building. Would you guess it was once a place for freezing food? The main building went up in 1916 as a freezing plant. It was designed by Icelandic architect Guðjón Samúelsson, and a later extension was added by architect Garðar Halldórsson. The address is Fríkirkjuvegur 7, right by the little lake Tjörnin in the city centre.
