You're standing at Battle Abbey, in the little English town of Battle. Right here, on Saturday 14 October 1066, the Battle of Hastings was fought. William the Conqueror defeated King Harold, and England was changed for good. William had vowed to build a monastery if he won. Then in 1070, Pope Alexander II ordered the Normans to do penance for all the killing. So an abbey went up, with the high altar of its church on the very spot where Harold was said to have fallen.
