You're standing at Medvedgrad, a medieval fortress on the southern slopes of Medvednica mountain, about ten kilometres north of Zagreb. The name roughly means Bear Castle. Medved is the word for bear in Kajkavian, the local dialect. Have a look around. The castle sits on Mali Plazur, a spur of the main ridge, roughly halfway between the city and the summit of Sljeme. That spot was chosen on purpose. It's high and easy to defend. And it works both ways: on a clear day you can spot the tall main tower from far away.
