You're standing by the church of Hornhuizen, close to the Wadden coast of Groningen. Start with the tower. It's quite a bit older than the church beside it, dating from the fifteenth century. On top sits a pyramid roof with a coloured lantern, and that yellow lantern is what makes the tower easy to spot from far away. It used to be taller. By 1815 it was so run down that the top section gave way, and a few years later it was cut back to the height of the church. Have a look at the angled buttresses on the corners, and the little brick stair turret on the north side.
