You're standing at De Hoanne, which is Frisian for The Rooster. It's a Second World War memorial. Look up. On top of a ten-metre brick column stands a bronze rooster, made by the sculptor Willem Valk. Look at his posture. This rooster is ready for a fight. He stands for the Dutch people's longing for freedom, and their readiness to defend that freedom at any cost.
