You're standing on Dušní Street in Josefov, Prague's old Jewish quarter. In front of you is the Spanish Synagogue, one of six synagogues in this neighbourhood. Take a look at the façade. With its arches and intricate patterns, it feels more like a palace in southern Spain than a building in Central Europe. That's exactly the idea. Architects Vojtěch Ignác Ullmann and Josef Niklas worked in the Moorish Revival style, drawing on the Alhambra in Granada. That's where the name comes from. In the early days, German-speaking Jews simply called it the temple on Holy Spirit Street.
