You're standing at the Oelemars, between the town of Losser and the German border. In front of you is a large lake, up to fifteen metres deep. It isn't a natural lake but a sand pit, and sand is still being dug here today. The name is much older than the lake. Oelemars means 'marsh where owls live'. This used to be mostly marshland and wet heath, east of the little river Dinkel.
